I wanted this chapter to be as thorough as possible, in order for my site not to be a commercial link to sell my puppies. That way dog lovers, customers or not, can find helpful advice.

• Feeding your dog

You have two choices:

    - Homemade food: Provided that you respect the nutritional requirements for your pet you can prepare homemade balanced meals with meat and vegetables. However this is a rather costly solution and you might find it quite demanding between work, housework, children etc, to find time to prepare a balanced meal for your pet.

    - Industrial food: Pet food manufacturers have made great progress in the nutritional quality of their product. There is a type of food for every breed and every age. I recommend that you use high-quality food not found in supermarket, you might save some money at first by buying second-range food at the supermarket but the weight and growth problems encountered will soon be more expensive in vet bills. By choosing quality you'll do what's best for your loving companion.

Feeding your puppy

Don't overfeed him while his growing that might be damaging to his future health and can lead to severe disorders like dysplasia
Number of meals per day according to your puppy's age:
  • 2 to 6 months: 3 meals
  • 6 to 12 months: 2 meals
  • after 1 year: 1 or 2 meals
Don't leave the food out at all times, if so your puppy will snack all day and won't eat properly at meal time. Also don't change his food, I gave you the food he was raised on the day of departure. Changing his food can give him diarrhea.
When your puppy arrives to his new home, he might refuse to eat. This is normal, do not worry too much, your pet is stressed and there is no more competition for food between his brothers and sisters. Don't panic and start blaming the food, I assure you that he loves this food, he was raised on it. Be patient a healthy puppy will never refuse to eat for long. Act normal, put out his bowl, if he doesn't eat take the bowl away and give it back to him at the next meal.

Things not to do:
    change his food
snacks between meals (he won't be hungry anymore)
leaving his food out at all times
giving him back the food bowl every five minutes if he didn't eat the first time
    feed him by hand

- Supplements/vitamins:

There is no need for supplements/vitamins if you give your puppy high quality food. In any case do not give your pet anything without checking with me or your vet.

Feeding your adult dog :

1 or 2 meals a day ?
Giving a dog two meals a day reduces the quantity eaten at each meal which helps prevent the bloating/turning of stomach. If the dog stays quite calm after eating his meal you can switch him to one meal a day. Some dogs can also have their food out all the times as they regulate themselves. After eating your pet should avoid:
After eating your pet should avoid:
  • long walks
  • playing with children
  • reproduction
  • any exciting outside activities

- Loss of appetite:

This can happen when the weather is very hot: feed your pet early in the morning or late at night. Just like humans pets sometimes are not very hungry. If nothing else is wrong with your dog, don't worry it's normal.

- Too gluttonous:

It's bad for your dog to eat too fast, he doesn't chew well and thus his digestion is hampered. Here is a little trick, you can pour his food on the floor, he will have to chew the nibbles one by one and not all at once. Another tip is to put big stones in his bowl, he will then have to look for the food and pace himself.

- Bones

Even as a young puppy, nothing is better for fun and healthy teeth than a big bone. Your dog will spend hours chewing on it. Chicken and rabbit bones are very dangerous because they can perforate his stomach. Flat bones are also very dangerous because they are brittle and can lead to a fatal occlusion.

- Water

Fresh water should be available all day to your dog as industrial food is quite salty.
